Meet the designer

Carl Sundqvist, 34 years old

Based in Stockholm, Sweden

Occupation, Co-founder and designer at Marc Mirren

Let’s start at the very beginning. How and why did you come to jewellery design?

Well, the road to where I am today has been a bumpy ride. I enrolled at a respected university in the south of Sweden in a very classic university town. At first my ambition was to become a banker in London, however after visiting some of the banks I had in mind during the financial crisis in 2008, I changed my mind 180 degrees after witnessing the chaos. One day after my university classes, I attended a lecture where the co-founder and designer of the fashion brand Odd Molly was a speaker. I was greatly inspired by his story of designing and creating his own company and from that moment my mind shifted focus. I finished up receiving my masters degree and since then, design has been the center of my work, designing electronics and fashion accessories.

About four years ago, an opportunity arose where I could be a part of co-founding Marc Mirren, which has been a super interesting journey.

As a child I loved drinking Coca Cola, and when I was about 11 years old, I was able to buy a Coca Cola bottle silver pendant chain to express my strong love for the soda.

That moment was my first connection with jewellery. I am fascinated by the idea of making personal items, either in terms of expressing one's personality or just that every piece is unique, which is the case with natural materials, no item will look 100% the same. That is why I enjoy now working with freshwater pearls and charms, since they are both so personal.

Is there a book, picture or play that changed your life?

The book 7 Habits of Highly Effective People. It taught me to tailor my life with the end in mind. It helped me to focus on what I want to accomplish in this life.

Who would you most like to see wearing your jewellery, who hasn’t yet?

My first target group was my girlfriend, but now she is addicted to Marc Mirren, so I am glad I have an employee discount!

My next big dream would be Princess Madeleine of Sweden, as she is an amazing fashion icon, then I could die happy!

Where’s your favourite place in Sweden?

My family´s country house. It is located in the forest by a lake. I love to sit in our floating sauna and jump in the lake when it is covered in ice. Alsom I love walking in the forest with Frank, my dog.

Do you have a favourite painter?

I love pop-art, so Andy Warhol and his Campbell Soup paintings is one of my favourites, I hope to own one myself one day.

Do you have a favourite artist?

Kanye West, I am a big fan of his music and his Yeezy sneakers.

Where do you go to get inspiration?

I think it is really interesting to see how trends are being shaped by global happenings, and then apply Marc Mirren's design philosophy to that. Such an example is how the pandemic made people more aware of their own health and well being, which has impacted why we chose to have stones with healing properties in our Petrichor collection.

Best quote you’ve ever heard?

The mountain top is only as peaceful as the piece you bring with you.
